On the east slope of the famous Stevens Pass in Western Washington, Nason Creek sqeezes through an area known to the locals as the slot. This is one of the few places along the steep grade where access by road can be easily found and a short hike can provide shots like this.

Here we see a westbound "Z" train, of domestic stacks and trailers beginning the climb westward from the flatlands near Merritt Wa in July of '97.

Again we find a BNSF Z train on Stevens Pass, but this time it is an eastbounder, crossing the Skykomish River just west of Barring Wa, on the west slope of the pass.
