RAILFANS: In the wake of the madness and tragedy of September 11th, please remember that the whole nation is a little more aware and more on alert than in many decades. This includes the railroads who provide the lifeblood for our nation's commerce. With that in mind please be respectful and back off a little. Please don't tresspass to get pictures. It is not worth it to have a run-in with the police who are doing a great job right now. Thanks.
GOD BLESS AMERICA. LET US UNITE THE WORLD IN PEACE.
IN THIS ISSUE:
THE TRINIDAD LOOP.
Washington state is a land of great contrasts. High alpine mountains and rainforests are state hallmarks but dry desert plains are also the norm. In central Washington BNSF's Seattle to Spokane main climbs the unique, and rugged, desert grade out of the Columbia River Gorge. This issue's 'Editor's Corner', railfan feature takes you to there. Rail News / Last Word. Here's a fun shot. How do ya'think we got it?
RAILFAN MECCA NEWS ITEM:
SAND PATCH TOWER in southwestern PA has been decomissioned as of the end of October, 2001. SA Tower, which has stood for nearly a century to control movements over the famous grade's summit, is slated for demolishment in the near future. Hyndman tower, down the hill, WAS demolished on October 30th. The new signal system was cut in at SandPatch and eliminated the need for manual control for movements through the plant. Progress for the railroad but sadness for the rest of us.See my feature on Sand Patch in the archives page.
Operator Ed Karfelt, photographer and friend Dave Corsi, and I are seen here in Sand Patch's SA Tower only a few days before it was closed. I was a little misty when I left that night after our visit, because I knew that the next time I returned to Sand Patch Summit, The tower would most likely be gone. Had a lot of good memories from that place.
